Dentures made for one mouth: yours.

Dentistry is all about smiles — and a confident, healthy, beautiful smile matters even for patients wearing dentures. Every patient is unique, so we create one-of-a-kind dentures that feel good and look natural, fitted personally by Dr. Karidas in Stamford.

Our practice provides personalized denture services that meet the needs and comfort levels of our patients. Dentures are natural-looking replacement teeth that are removable, and they share a common function: replacing teeth that have become loose or been lost due to bone loss.

There are two types of dentures — full and partial — and within full dentures, two ways of placing them.

Types

The two kinds of dentures.

Full dentures
Given to patients when all of the natural teeth have been removed. Conventional full dentures are placed after the gum tissue has healed, which can take several months.
Immediate full dentures
Placed immediately after the teeth have been removed — no waiting for the gums to heal — though they may require frequent adjustments during the first couple of months of use.
Partial dentures
Attached to a metal frame that is connected to your natural teeth, and used to fill in where permanent teeth have been removed. Partials are considered a removable alternative to bridges.
When they’re needed

When it’s time for dentures.

When bone loss around the roots of teeth is great enough to loosen them or let them fall out, it’s time for dentures. Relax — no one enjoys losing their natural teeth, but you can still eat and talk regularly.

That said, dentures are not for everyone. If you want to know whether they are the right choice for you, please schedule an appointment. Our team will be happy to answer any questions you might have and can determine the best course of treatment for your ongoing dental health.

The fitting process

From exam to everyday life.

Examination.

The entire mouth is examined and a determination is made as to which teeth will have to be removed, and which will remain.

Extractions.

The loose teeth are extracted. With conventional full dentures, the gum tissue is then given time to heal — which can take several months — while immediate full dentures are placed right away.

Fitting.

Dentures are fitted to go over or around whatever teeth remain in the mouth, depending on the type.

The adjustment period.

There is an adjustment period after dentures are placed in the mouth, and it can take some getting used to. But once accustomed to the dentures, all the normal functionality and appearance return — and you just carry on as usual.

Daily care

Caring for your dentures.

Dentures, just like natural teeth, require daily maintenance to stay clean and keep bacteria from growing inside your mouth.

  • Handle them over a soft landing. Stand over a clean, folded towel or a sink full of water — if you accidentally drop your dentures, they are less likely to break.
  • Brush them every day. Dentures are not immune from plaque and tartar build-up. Use a soft-bristled brush and gently brush the surfaces, being careful not to break or bend the plastic. Between brushings, rinse your dentures after each meal.
  • Use a gentle cleanser. Many toothpastes, household cleaners, and mouthwashes can be too hard on dentures — a mild hand or dish soap is recommended. Check for the American Dental Association (ADA) seal of approval, or ask us which products are best for you.
  • Keep them moist when you’re not wearing them. Dentures left out of a cleaning solution or water can dry out, lose their shape, or even crack and break. Certain styles require certain soaking solutions, so ask which is best for yours.
  • Keep your gums and tongue clean. Even with a full set of dentures, gently clean your gums and tongue every day with a soft-bristled brush.

If your dentures do break, please contact our practice and schedule an appointment as soon as possible — broken dentures that don’t fit properly can irritate your gums and mouth. And keep scheduling regular checkups every six months so your smile stays healthy for years to come.

A steadier fit

Implant-stabilized dentures.

Often, implants can be used to further stabilize the dentures. We offer mini dental implants — about half the diameter of traditional implants — used mainly to stabilize lower dentures. They can be placed in one appointment and be immediately used, at 50–70% of the cost of standard dental implants, and the consult is free.
